Now Is the Time To Energize DS Research
The recent mapping of the human genome has ushered in an unprecedented opportunity for Down syndrome research. For the first time in our history scientists now have tools, techniques, and mouse models of DS that are making it easier to understand the biology of Down syndrome. The goal is clear – the identification of treatments aimed at improving learning, memory, speech
and even the late in life neurological decline experienced by those with Down
syndrome.
A Small Change in Cognitive Capability Could Have Profound Impact on Independence
Because the majority of individuals with Down syndrome fall into the mild to moderate range of cognitive impairment, a 10-20% improvement in cognitive capability can provide a greater number of people with the ability to live independently, to hold a job and to be more integrated into their communities.

Groundbreaking New Down Syndrome-Specific Cognitive Test Battery Developed to Enable New Clinical Trials and Advanced Research
Groundbreaking new research describing the development and validation of the new Arizona Cognitive Test Battery (ACTB) for individuals with Down syndrome has just been published in the September, 2010 issue of the Journal of Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (DSRTF) Innovation Research Grant recipients Drs. Jamie Edgin and Lynn Nadel at the University of Arizona, together with their research collaborators, describe the state-of-the-art ACTB as the first cognitive test battery specifically designed for use in individuals with Down syndrome across a range of ages and ability levels. This novel and highly specific cognitive test battery significantly enables assessment of therapeutic efficacy in new drug clinical trials and identification of factors influencing cognitive disability and variability. DSRTF Announces Appointment of New Executive Director
Palo Alto, CA – The Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (DSRTF) today announced the appointment of Chris Rose as the foundation’s Executive Director. Chris will assume the leadership position following Dr. Michael Harpold’s decision to focus full time on the foundation’s expanding research program.
Chris joins DSRTF, a leader in funding biomedical research that will accelerate the development of treatments to significantly improve cognition for individuals with Down syndrome, at an exciting time for the organization. With the identification of five drug targets, the viability of DSRTF’s founding premise has become apparent. Cognition research holds great promise for those with Down syndrome, increasing the ability of individuals with Down syndrome to live independently, to be gainfully employed and to be fully integrated in their communities. DSRTF Grant Award Recipients Discover a New Potential Therapeutic Strategy to Improve Cognition in Down Syndrome
The Down Syndrome Research and Treatment Foundation (DSRTF) is pleased to announce the publication of an article in Science Translational Medicine on November 18 by DSRTF-supported researchers, Drs. Ahmad Salehi, William Mobley, and colleagues, which describes a new potential therapeutic strategy to address cognitive decline and improve cognition in Down syndrome. Learn More »
